Careers at Manchester United can hinge on the smallest details, a well-timed loan spell, a manager’s trust at the right moment, or simply staying fit long enough to take a chance when it comes.

For every defender who goes on to play at Old Trafford, there are others whose time at United is shaped more by circumstance than ability.

One former United centre-back has now reflected on just how fine that line can be, insisting that injuries, rather than a lack of talent or attitude, ultimately denied him a real crack at first-team football.

Corriere Romagna has reported that Luca Ercolani had his chance under Jose Mourinho cut short after a spate of injuries which required surgery.

The defender came through a series of youth spells in Italy before a move to England in 2016, in a move that he describes as life-changing.

In the interview with Corriere Romagna, Ercolani remembers the “incredible” training complex, daily double sessions and the intensity of being part of a club built on elite standards.

He never saw himself as a superstar in waiting, but as a hard-working defender who had earned the right to learn his trade inside a world-class set-up.

United clearly saw enough, too as an initial three-year deal was followed by a two-year extension as he edged closer to senior recognition under Mourinho.

However, that trajectory was cut short by a brutal run of bad luck.

First came a metatarsal break that sidelined him for three months, and not long after returning, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that required surgery in London, with the rehabilitation overlapping the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.

By the time he was back on the pitch, United had already decided against offering another contract, a decision he believes was heavily influenced by those back-to-back setbacks.

Today, Luca Ercolani is rebuilding his career in Italy’s lower leagues and has become an important figure for Pianese, where he has found stability, regular football and the sense of calm that often comes after leaving the Premier League spotlight behind.

His story is a reminder that for United’s young defenders, the difference between a breakthrough and a farewell can sometimes be written in medical reports rather than match reports.
