Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel helped the Lilywhites go through to the Europa League semi-finals. The Frenchman started the crucial game against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday and was impressive down the left flank for Ange Postecoglou’s side. However, since joining from Bayern Munich in January, the 19-year-old has struggled to get going at N17.
Spurs reached the last four of the Europa League and moved one step closer to ending their 17-year-long trophy drought this season. It has not been a memorable season for the Lilywhites in the Premier League, but Ange’s men have certainly overperformed in Europe. It is fair to say that Ange Postecoglou has now shifted his focus from the Premier League to the Europa League.
Tottenham players have struggled with injuries and lack of form this season. The North London club has not managed to overcome these difficulties and Daniel Levy tried to address this situation by signing Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso and Antonin Kinsky in January to add depth to the squad. But the lack of form shown by the majority of players has certainly not helped Big Ange’s cause.
Mathys Tel has not got going at N17 since joining from Bayern Munich in January. Spurs fended off competition from Manchester United to sign the 19-year-old, but is has not worked out well till now. The forward has failed to make an impact on a consistent basis at the club and at one point, he was also dropped from the starting eleven by Ange Postecoglou.
Speaking about Tel’s future at Tottenham, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness said on Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast,
“Postecoglou’s days are very much numbered, and Tel has been tarred with that brush now. I think this could come down to the last minute for that decision to be made. He hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory on the pitch, from what I’ve seen. It’s one of those – he may well go back to Bayern Munich.”
Wyness then added,
“It was a clever move to do a loan deal instead of an emergency transfer, as we’ve seen so many clubs make mistakes before. I personally think he will not end up in the Spurs shirt next season.”
The ex-Everton CEO believes that Ange Postecoglou’s uncertain future will have an impact on Mathys Tel’s future at Tottenham. Keith Wyness also insists that Tel has not performed as expected and has failed to make an impact at N17 since coming in. He also believes that it was a panic buy to address an emergency and Daniel Levy made a mistake signing the Frenchman for a huge sum of money.
Though Mathys Tel joined the club on an initial loan in January, but the Lilywhites have an option of making the deal permanent in the summer if they feel he is worth keeping on. Tottenham can make the deal permanent by paying Bayern Munich £45 million in the summer. For now, it does seem unlikely that the North London club will splash out the cash for the 19-year-old.
As per Sofascore, Tel has played in eleven games in all competitions for Spurs this season, scoring just three goals and picking up a yellow card. It has not been a good stint at N17, but things in football can change quickly and a surge in form from Tel might just help Ange Postecoglou’s side lift silverware at the end of the season.
