Tottenham managed to end the 17-year wait for a major trophy after winning the Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur fans will forever remember this season in more ways than one. The Lilywhites managed to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy last week after winning the Europa League. Ange Postecoglou’s men exceeded all expectations and ensured a victory against Manchester United in the final. Winning the competition also meant that the North London club ensured Champions League football for next season.

But the Premier League campaign was a disaster of all sorts. The Lilywhites finished the season just a place above the relegation zone, registering 22 league losses along the way. After securing the Europa League title last week, Ange’s men registered a humbling 1-4 defeat at home against Brighton in the last game of the Premier League season.

However, Spurs have the chance to build on the Europa League success and kickstart a new era at N17 next season. The Lilywhites cannot afford to be complacent in the summer as they need to address a lot of issues in the squad. The good thing is that the blueprint is clear and it is easy to point out in which department Ange’s men have suffered the most.

Jose Mourinho is happy after watching Tottenham lift the Europa League trophy

It was an emotional day for everyone involved with Tottenham after they defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final. The victory against the Red Devils ended the club’s long wait for a major trophy and ensured the monkey was off their back in terms of going trophyless for so long. Fans and ex-players showcased their love towards the club after the final whistle as well.

Former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho also took the time out to give his verdict on Tottenham’s historic win against United. Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho said,

“Tottenham play Champions League and of course for Mr Levy, the millions the Champions League gives, for him it’s the best news. For the fans, the players and Ange, it’s a title. Yes, the game was not amazing but they made history for Tottenham because Tottenham didn’t have a trophy for so many years. I saw Sonny [Tottenham captain Son Heung-min] crying with the cup… also for Tottenham fans it was a special feeling.”

Jose Mourinho had a tongue in cheek moment after saying that Daniel Levy would be happy to earn the millions after Tottenham qualified for the Champions League next season. The former Spurs manager also suggested that the Lilywhites made history after ending their trophy drought and he was happy to see Heung-Min Son and the fans celebrating the success after the final whistle.

The North London club needs to build on the Europa League success now and look to close the gap on their rivals next season. Spurs need to be proactive in the summer and bring in quality players if they want to compete for trophies next season. Ensuring Champions League football for next season will also mean that the Lilywhites will need to have a good squad depth. Fans will hope that Daniel Levy invests into the squad and the club sign their intended targets quickly.
