Tottenham made the bold decision to replace Ange Postecoglou with Thomas Frank last summer as the club looked to build on its Europa League success. Big Ange had just ended the club’s long-standing trophy drought by staying true to his word of winning a trophy in his second season at N17. But that was not enough to save him from the sack, as the Lilywhites opted to go for Frank in their bid to compete on all fronts this season.
In hindsight, it is safe to suggest that the North Londoners made the wrong call by appointing Thomas Frank as their manager. The Danish tactician was never the right fit at N17 and was always going to struggle to fill the boots of Ange Postecoglou. Despite his accomplishments with Brentford, where he led the Bees to promotion and turned them into mid-table giants in the Premier League, Frank never really benefitted from being in the spotlight at Spurs.
The Dane clearly struggled to meet the fans’ expectations and made numerous errors during his time at the club. Under him, the Lilywhites went on to win just seven of their 27 league matches. Frank left Spurs stranded in the bottom half of the Premier League table, just five points above 18th placed West Ham. The loud boos and jeers from the fans during matches were enough evidence that the former Brentford boss had run his race at N17.
Tottenham players struggled to implement Thomas Frank’s tactics into their game during his time at the club. The ongoing injury crisis at N17 did not help his cause either, as the Danish tactician was forced to field a weakened side in recent matches. But that was no excuse for the team’s poor performances in the Premier League, as the North Londoners managed to win just two home matches in the league during the first half of the campaign.
Christian Eriksen has now expressed his disappointment about things not working out for Thomas Frank during his time at Spurs. Speaking to Viaplay (via Sport Witness), the midfielder, who was a vital cog under Pochettino at Spurs, said,
“On behalf of Thomas, I am disappointed that it has turned out the way it has. I hope Thomas will be successful wherever he is. I had also hoped for Tottenham’s sake that they had been more successful. But of course, football moves so quickly, and when things don’t go well, the coach is out the door, and it didn’t exactly go Thomas’ way.”
As Eriksen rightly points out, football moves quickly, and Thomas Frank did not do enough to convince the Spurs hierarchy that he was the right man to lead the club forward. But Eriksen hopes that the Danish tactician bounces back and manages to prove his worth at some other club instead. The former Tottenham icon also wishes that the Lilywhites return to winning ways in the Premier League and give themselves a fresh start.
The time has come for Igor Tudor to take over the reins at N17 and turn the club’s fortunes around in the Premier League. His first challenge will be to get the players ready for the upcoming North London derby against Arsenal this weekend. It is a must-win tie for both teams, and victory would instantly make Tudor a fan favourite with the Lilywhites.
Will we see the same old Spurs under the new interim manager? Or will Igor Tudor manage to uplift the team and get them to play the free-flowing, attacking football that the fans are craving to see? Only time will tell.
