Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram is set to be fit for his team’s upcoming Champions League semifinal first leg against Barcelona.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that it is still up in the air whether the Frenchman will start.

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is very much sweating the fitness of striker Marcus Thuram.

The 27-year-old is certainly a crucial player in attack for the Nerazzurri.

Beyond Thuram’s goals, the former Borussia Monchengladbach striker is also a player who provides pace and dynamism in attack for Inter.

In a remarkable statistic pointed out by the Gazzetta, Inter have scored 2.3 goals per match in Serie A with Thuram in the team – but that number drops to 0.3 without the France international.

Marcus Thuram has missed three matches for Inter.

The 27-year-old suffered some muscular fatigue during Inter’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg draw against Barcelona.

And to say that Inter have felt Thuram’s absence would be an understatement.

The Nerazzurri have lost to Bologna in Serie A, AC Milan in the Coppa Italia, and Roma in Serie A.

Notably, Inter failed to score in all three of those matches.

Therefore, Inter coach Inzaghi will feel that Thuram’s return can hardly come soon enough.

It is good news, therefore. The Gazzetta report that Thuram is right on the verge of returning.

According to the newspaper, there is little doubt that the 27-year-old is on track to return for the first leg of Inter’s Champions League semifinal tie against Barcelona this week.

Therefore, what is in doubt is whether Thuram will be ready to start that match.

It could be a risk to slot Thuram straight back into the starting eleven after a couple weeks on the sidelines.

But it will be up with Inzaghi whether to take that risk.
