Fresh insight into Darren Fletcher’s connection with Celtic has emerged through respected Manchester United journalist Andy Mitten…
The founder of United We Stand revealed that he was in attendance at the recent Glasgow Derby clash at Celtic Park.
Celtic were beaten 3-1 by theRangers at Celtic Park which spelled the end for Wilfried Nancy after a disastrous month in charge of the Scottish champions.
The fallout continued in England the following day, when Ruben Amorim oversaw his final match in charge of United before stepping aside after a heated media exchange that followed a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
Fletcher was subsequently handed temporary charge of the side, while Michael Carrick has since been widely tipped as a leading candidate to do a Martin O’Neill and guide the club through to the end of the campaign.
Mitten also disclosed that Fletcher had been in contact prior to the Glasgow Derby, providing him with a shortlist of Celtic players to monitor during the game – further underlining the caretaker boss’s keen interest in the Scottish champions.
Speaking on talkSPORT Mitten said: “They bring in Darren Fletcher, I’ve got a very high opinion of Darren Fletcher. I was speaking to him, all last Saturday, I went to Celtic vs (the)Rangers and he was telling me which players to watch out for.”
“He is a childhood Celtic fan, but I don’t think he knew what was going to happen the following day.”
He continued: “I think he’ll make a very good manager, Darren Fletcher, I don’t know where that will be, I think he spoke well, but that was only for a couple of games, and then it now looks like Michael Carrick, I spoke with a Solskjaer several times, last week as well, these are difficult times.”
“I don’t have a panacea of the problems at Manchester United right now, it’s been a very disappointing season, league form has picked up, but cup form has been atrocious, there were 22 cup games last year, there have been two this year, the one season where Manchester United needed to be in doing rather domestic cups was this season.”
In a weird way, both Nancy and Amorim’s time at both clubs came to end because they persisted with a three at the back system. They weren’t for changing and that was ultimately their downfall.
Hopefully Martin O’Neill can salvage something from this season after the extensive damage caused principally by those in the Celtic Boardroom. Leaving Brendan Rodgers alone to see out his contract would have seen us in a much better position today.
Keeping Martin O’Neill as interim instead of rushing on a rookie amateur into the job – up there with the worst decisions ever taken by Celtic – would have probably seen us win the cup and be clear at the top of the league. Rodgers and Nancy were chased out the door but people like Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay have yet to be held accountable for their failings. Their time at Celtic is up, the sooner they go the better.
