Mbaye Niang became the enemy No. 1 for Frosinone fans after his stoppage-time winner condemned their side to Serie A relegation. It’s fair to say Eusebio Di Francesco’s team failed to hold up their end of the bargain, succumbing to a 1-0 home defeat to Udinese on the final day.

Despite boasting the best survival chances heading into the last Serie A round, Frosinone fumbled a glorious opportunity to secure back-to-back seasons in Italy’s top flight for the first time in the club’s history. ‘Stalemate kings’ Udinese claimed a vital triumph at Benito Stirpe, courtesy of Keinan Davis’ 76th-minute winner.

A point would’ve sent Frosinone into the relegation playoffs, but they couldn’t find an equalizer down the final stretch. While Udinese maintained their impressive run of consecutive Serie A campaigns to 30, the Canaries return to Serie B after just one year and have no one but themselves to blame for that.

Heartbreaking scenes at Benito Stirpe after the final whistle saw the fans sit with heads in their arms in disbelief as Frosinone couldn’t have had a better position going into Gameweek 38. Unfortunately, they cracked under pressure again and will have to seek another chance to dine at the top table again next term.

With Frosinone relegated, Di Francesco’s future is in doubt. The board trusted him to keep the team in Serie A, but after tonight’s fiasco, the ex-Sassuolo and Roma manager may need to start packing his bags as early as tomorrow morning.
