Tottenham Hotspur will look to bring in offensive reinforcements in the summer. The club bosses have been looking to bring in a new striker at White Hart Lane, given the injury problems to Richarlison and the massive dip in Son Heung-min’s form and fitness levels.
Mathys Tel arrived on loan from Bayern Munich on the deadline day of the January transfer window. The Lilywhites do have an option to sign him permanently but are not fully sure whether to pay around £45 million or not. As a result, they will try to renegotiate buy option in Tel’s loan deal.
In addition, Spurs will not sign Timo Werner permanently from RB Leipzig. The 29-year-old re-signed on loan from RB Leipzig in July 2024 after a decent second half of 2023/24 campaign. Ange Postecoglou felt the German forward would be a good backup option to have in his squad in case of an injury.
However, that was a massive error in judgement, with Timo Werner not being up to the mark and delivering the goods for Tottenham when called upon. Big Ange, along with the decision-makers at N17, have run out of patience with his lack of output and poor decision-making in the final third, leading them to decide that he is not worthy of getting a permanent contact at this club.
Interestingly, the Germany international is not short of suitors in the Premier League, even if Tottenham are not keen to keep him in North London beyond his loan spell.
According to Alex Crook’s talkSPORT transfer notebook, Fulham are interested in signing Werner. West Ham United, too, have been put on red alert over his potential availability at the end of his Spurs loan spell, with the versatile forward wanting to stay in England next season.
Werner has been on the fringes at White Hart Lane since the turn of the year. He has no future in a Tottenham shirt after enjoying only 70 minutes of Premier League action since December. The ex-Stuttgart man has failed to stamp his mark in England, scoring just three goals in 41 appearances.
His attempt to prove himself at Tottenham after a poor ending to his time with Chelsea in 2022 has been nothing short of a disaster. Despite him failing to cut the mustard in the English top-flight, his stock in the Premier League seemingly still remains high. This is perhaps down to his goalscoring record in the Bundesliga, where he has netted 113 goals across two different spells with RB Leipzig.
It was reported earlier that Spurs are willing to move on Werner once the season ends and that plan remains intact. Honestly, it was never a good idea to sign him on a season-long loan from Leipzig in the first place, which further shows that a lot of improvement must take place when it comes to recruitment at the club.
All in all, once Werner’s temporary contract at N17 expires at the end of June, he will be free to decide the next step in his career.
