Tottenham urged to offer Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur new contracts

With most of the focus on the incomings in the ongoing summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have not forgotten about the players already in the roster at Hotspur Way, as Daniel Levy is preparing to reward Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur with new contracts in the ongoing offseason.

Both of them have been linked with a move away from the North Londoners this summer, but when it comes to their performances, the pair have been immense for the Lilywhites, even during turbulent injury-hit periods in the past seasons.

But the links for a probable exit show that Spurs cannot take their commitment at N17 for granted, and this is exactly why Daniel Levy is set to step in and reward them with new terms, to not only keep them at Hotspur Way but also build around them under the incoming head coach Thomas Frank.

So are Romero and Bentancur staying put at Hotspur Way?

Well, if we walk back to the start of the ongoing summer window, club vice-captain Romero was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, and the Uruguayan maestro Bentancur had also attracted a lot of interest from La Liga. But despite links, none of those moves materialised, and according to multiple reports, both players are now expected to remain at Tottenham beyond the ongoing offseason.

And while that news will be celebrated among many supporters at Hotspur Way, owner of the reputed Spurs podcast Lilywhites Rose suggests that Tottenham should go a step further and hand both of them new contracts. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, he said:

“I think Romero’s future is tied to Bentancur’s future.

“I know they get on very well away from football, and Bentancur only has 12 months left on his contract. Therefore, I think from Tottenham’s point of view, it would be sensible to extend both their deals and then build the team around them.

“I know Bentancur has moments of frustration where, for all manner of reasons, he gets suspended and banned. However, if he can get focused as he was during that second year under Antonio Conte, where he was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, he can return to that level, I’m sure.”

Why do these new contracts matter?

If we look at Romero and Bentancur, they are two very integral players in the dressing room, and this comes in terms of technical ability as well as in terms of leadership.

We know that Bentancur, when he is fully fit, is still one of the best midfielders in the English top tier, and then Romero is arguably Tottenham’s most aggressive player when he’s not sidelined. And Thomas Frank would have two reliable options who he can try and build his spine around, but their fitness will be vital given how both the players have had injury problems recently.

But this contract shows that Tottenham do need both on the pitch, and so as often as they could have them, the better.
