Both Matteo Gabbia and Marten de Roon were forced off after a nasty clash of heads during the Coppa Italia quarter-final between Milan and Atalanta.

The pair collided heavily at the back post as they both went for the Charles De Ketelaere knockdown.

It was a familiar feeling for Gabbia, who only a few weeks ago was knocked unconscious during an accidental crash with his Villarreal teammate Raul Albiol.

This time, the Italian defender was seemingly left with a broken nose, or at least a bloody one that forced him off the pitch immediately.

De Roon tried to continue, but a few minutes later felt dizzy and was taken off for treatment.

The Dutch midfielder had tests amid concerns he might have suffered head trauma.

This incident also caused controversy, as Tijjani Reijnders seemed to nudge De Roon into Gabbia, prompting penalty appeals from Atalanta.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini took his protests too far and was awarded first a yellow card for dissent, then a red.
