Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy has signed coach Greg Vanney to a multiyear contract extension.
Vanney, who has been with the team since 2021, led the team to its record-setting sixth MLS Cup last season, but his trophy celebrations have been short-lived. A rough offseason featuring long-term injuries (attacking midfielder Riqui Puig, winger Joseph Paintsil) and salary-cap-driven player sales (striker Dejan Joveljic, midfielders Gaston Brugman and Mark Delgado) unsettled the Galaxy in 2025, and the team's title defense has been nothing short of a disaster.
Vanney's Galaxy are winless in the league with three draws and 10 losses. They have not just the worst record in the league, but also one of the worst 13-game records in league history.

The Galaxy's whiplash-inducing fall from grace led many to question Vanney's effectiveness as a coach. By extending his contract now — well before he's managed to right the ship — the club is delivering a firm response in his favor.
"Greg is one of the most respected and successful coaches in MLS history, and we are excited to be continuing under his leadership,” said Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz. “While this season’s results haven’t reflected our standards, this was a decision made following our 2024 MLS Cup victory and we remain confident in the project we are building with Greg.
"We have a clear path forward to returning to an MLS champion level."
Vanney's contract extension is a bold move from the club and one that deserves a certain amount of respect from the MLS fandom. While Vanney isn't blameless in the Galaxy's nightmare season — he's run through eight separate midfield combinations already and failed to integrate new offensive signings — the club seems certain that he's not the main offender. The Galaxy offering Vanney a multiyear contract proves he's got a compelling plan for the future; Vanney accepting that contract proves he thinks it's possible to make it work. This new deal removes a massive variable from the Galaxy's shoulders and allows the team to focus on the problem at hand: stopping this unprecedented skid.
“The key thing in any challenging moments is that you have a plan and a method and a way to get out of it," Vanney said.
“It starts with the next game. But there’s also the next series of games, the next six months, the next year. All of those things have been a part of it.”
The Galaxy are set to face local rival LAFC in a heated derby match on Sunday, May 18. LAFC is fifth in the West with 21 points; the Galaxy are dead last with just 3.
