Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso praises Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori, calling him a ‘smart’ player who can even play as a central midfielder.

Gattuso held a press conference on Monday, ahead of Italy’s World Cup qualifying games against Moldova (Thursday) and Norway (Sunday).

The Azzurri boss revealed that Federico Chiesa has decided against playing for the national team this month, while Sandro Tonali will likely miss the game against Norway as he’s at risk of suspension.

Gattuso replied to a question about another Premier League star, Calafiori, praising the Arsenal defender for his versatility.

Italy coach Gattuso praises Calafiori

“He’s not just a left-back, he plays in more than one role,” the Azzurri boss told reporters, including Football Italia’s.

“He recognises the spaces and knows how to move. He’s a smart player; he can play anywhere. Left-back, centre-back, central midfielder. He can do anything.”

Calafiori has one goal and two assists in 12 appearances across all competitions with Arsenal this season.

The 23-year-old made his senior Italy debut in June 2024 and has collected 12 international appearances with the Azzurri.

Calafiori’s contract with Arsenal expires in June 2029.

Italy sit second in the World Cup qualifiers Group I, three points below leaders Norway, but Erling Haaland’s side have a better goal difference, which makes them the favourites to directly qualify for the World Cup.
