Manchester United need to start getting serious about signing a new striker, because the options on the transfer market are starting to be taken off the table by rivals clubs.
Liverpool have already signed Hugo Ekitke from Eintracht Frankfurt to a megadeal and are now making a serious push for Newcastle United superstar Alexander Isak, too.
Meanwhile, Manchester United rivals Arsenal handed the Red Devils a direct blow in the striker transfer market by agreeing to terms with Viktor Gyokeres, who should be arriving as an official signing shortly.
There aren’t many options left for Manchester United that are top-class options, and United really need to sign a great striker to replace the overmatched young duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins is one option, but a younger and more exciting player with serious 30-goal upside, given his finishing and raw physical tools, is RB Leipzig superstar Benjamin Sesko.
Wanted by Arsenal and Chelsea at various points over the past year, Sesko is a gem and Leipzig know it, which is why they’ve been so cautious about selling him at the right price.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, the right clubs have a special advantage for the 22-year-old Bundesliga star and could sign him for cheaper than what Liverpool paid for Ekitike from Frankfurt.
Romano states that there is a “gentleman agreement” between Sesko and Leipzig to allow the 14-goal marksman to leave the German giants for slightly cheaper than the Red Bull-owned club could otherwise get on the open market.
Per Fab, a few “special clubs” could sign the striker for just 70-80 million euros with an additional 5-10 million in add-ons. That still seems expensive, but it’s not much more than what Arsenal paid for Gyokeres, who is a handful of years older than Sesko.
Manchester United need to see if they are on that special list of clubs, and it’s hard to believe that a club of their status and stature in world football would not be, even if they’ve fallen on hard times and won’t be in European football next season.
Given Sesko’s raw goal-scoring ability and future upside as a current top striker in the Bundesliga, Manchester United have to be all over the opportunity to sign him, because there is nobody close to his level who could conceivably be purchased on the summer transfer market at this point. It’s Sesko or bust now.
