George Weah admits son Tim was a Milan target and praises Maignan for actions

AC Milan legend George Weah has recently stated in an interview that his son underwent talks with the Rossoneri and offered his support to Mike Maignan after the events in Udine. 

When thinking of iconic names for Milan, Weah is near the top. During his time at the club, he scored 58 goals in 147 games and was a huge part of the Rossoneri winning two Scudetto’s. Furthermore, during his time at the club, he became the first non-European footballer to win the Ballon d’Or.

It could have been possible that his son, Tim Weah, could have continued his legacy, with the Diavolo being linked with a move to bring the forward to the club, and he admitted it would be great to play at Milan. However, he ended up with Juventus, where he is yet to score.

Weah spoke to Il Giornale to reflect on his time at the club and also to speak about his son’s potential move to the club, amongst other topics and his comments were relayed by Calciomercato.com

Do you reminisce about your time with Milan?

“How could I not have? I spent four and a half very intense years at Milan, with great teammates and great victories.”

Do you support Juventus?

“I loved Milan and its fans. I remain Milanista, but I support Juve. Can you?”

Were there talks between Tim and Milan?

“With Maldini, we had spoken to each other before Juve for Tim. It seemed he was interested in taking him from Lille, then nothing came of it.”

Thoughts on Maldini’s departure…

“I am sorry for how he was treated, but there is not always respect for history and Paolo was the history of Milan. And even as a manager, I think he did good things. He won the last Scudetto, didn’t he?”

Racism and Maignan…

“I think Mike, by leaving the pitch, did the right thing. Those people should not enter stadiums. Mike felt humiliated. Unfortunately, racism is everywhere, it was like that in my time too, even on the pitch, not just in the stands and the corners. It’s a way to provoke, they want to attack the sports opponent, but by using racism they hurt you, they humiliate you.”

Should games be behind closed doors?

“I know they closed the stadium in Udine for a match, even those who are not at fault pay, but I think it’s right. There should be a lot of matches with closed doors, maybe people would understand that racists should be isolated.”

The headbutt at Jorge Costa for racism…

“At the time, it often happened that opponents called me a ni**er and insulted me because of my skin, but he had gone too far, calling me a monkey for the whole match, in front of everyone, his and my teammates, even the referee. Nobody protected me, and I got 6 days disqualification, but I would do what I did again, I hope he remembered that when he faced other black players. No, I never met him again, but I don’t care.”
