Giorgio Scalvini scouted by Manchester United

Manchester United are continuing to assess potential additions to their defence as the club work through several options capable of operating on the left.

The Red Devils have been linked with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, while Fulham defender Antonee Robinson and Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly have also emerged as possible alternatives.

However, United’s recruitment team are not limiting their search to conventional left-backs, with a more versatile Serie A option also under consideration.

According to The Telegraph, United are among several clubs to have scouted Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, who has admirers at Old Trafford.

The Italy international is primarily a centre-back but can operate across either a back three or a back four.

He has also demonstrated an ability to step forward into defensive midfield, giving him the positional flexibility United appear to value.

Scalvini would therefore represent a very different option to Robinson or Hall.

Rather than providing the profile of an attacking full-back, the 22-year-old could offer greater defensive security on the left while also allowing United to change shape during matches.

This is also not the first time the defender has appeared on the club’s radar.

Manchester United’s long-term interest in Giorgio Scalvini

United scouts watched Scalvini on multiple occasions during 2024, when he was being assessed as one of several potential centre-back additions.

The club’s interest was then reported again in the summer of 2025 as a number of Premier League sides considered a move for the Atalanta academy graduate.

That longer history makes the latest update more significant than an isolated scouting trip.

United have now monitored Scalvini across several recruitment cycles, despite major changes taking place at Old Trafford during that period.

The Italian’s development has been interrupted by serious injury setbacks, but he remains regarded as one of the most talented young defenders in Serie A.

His experience in Atalanta’s flexible defensive system would also make him an intriguing option for a side seeking greater tactical variety.

Nevertheless, scouting does not mean a transfer is imminent. There is currently no suggestion that United have submitted an offer or entered negotiations with Atalanta.

For now, Giorgio Scalvini should be viewed as one of several names being assessed as United consider how best to strengthen the left side of their defence.

However, the club’s repeated interest suggests he is a player whose progress has been followed closely for some time. The coming weeks will show whether that admiration develops into a formal approach.
