Olivier Giroud has praised Mikel Arteta ahead of his return to Arsenal as a Lille player for this evening’s Champions League match. The Frenchman has announced that this will be his final season in professional football, as he returns to a club where he scored more than 100 goals.
Giroud and Arteta were teammates at the Emirates, and the striker delivered several memorable performances for Arsenal in key matches before moving to Chelsea. Although his departure for their London rivals could have changed how supporters viewed him, his contribution in north London remains appreciated.
Giroud expects Arsenal supporters to welcome him warmly when he returns this evening. His goals and performances remain part of his connection with the Gunners.
Having played alongside Arteta, Giroud also saw the qualities that could help the Spaniard become a manager. He is therefore not surprised by Arteta’s work at Arsenal, where he has built a competitive team.
Giroud spoke about his former teammate’s character and managerial achievements, according to Hayters.
“Mikel is a great person, a great manager and he has shown that with the team he has built.
“The Premier League title proves he has done incredible work, and he was given the time which was very important.”
Adding: “I remember Mikel as a player, and you could see he was made for a managerial career because he was a leader on the pitch, but off it, too.
“He was very demanding with himself, and his team-mates and great technically.”
Giroud’s remarks underline the respect he has for Arteta, as a person and manager. He remembers a teammate who led by example and demanded a great deal of himself and others. Arteta’s progress has reinforced that impression as Giroud prepares to face his former club.
