Manchester United defender Godwill Kukonki is now set to remain at the club beyond the summer transfer window after talks over his future, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

The 18-year-old had considered leaving United permanently in search of a clearer route towards regular senior football, but the latest discussions have resulted in him staying put.

Godwill Kukonki has returned to training and could still commit his long-term future to the Reds by finally signing the professional contract that was initially agreed last year.

The defender is currently in the third year of his scholarship agreement, with United having previously hoped to tie him down to professional terms.

Should that deal be completed before the transfer deadline, a loan move could then become an option for the upcoming season.

Kukonki has already had a taste of senior involvement at United.

He was named in a first-team squad for the first time when former manager Ruben Amorim’s side faced Arsenal during the Portuguese coach’s opening month in charge.

The youngster’s situation had attracted plenty of attention, particularly after he was not included among the 9 academy players handed professional contracts this summer.
