Tottenham Hotspur’s striker depth has been severely tested in the opening months of the new campaign.
Dominic Solanke has barely played this season due to a persistent ankle issue. He recently underwent a minor ankle surgery, ruling the striker out for several weeks. The Lilywhites signed Randal Kolo Muani on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain on summer transfer window’s deadline day, surprising the majority of the fanbase.
Owing to the injury struggles of Richarlison and Solanke, Spurs decided to go for Randal Kolo Muani to beef up the striker options. However, the French forward has managed only 13 minutes in a Tottenham shirt against Villarreal in the Champions League last month. Since then, he has been out with a dead leg, missing five games in the process.
Having not played for almost a month has raised a few questions about the true extent of the 26-year-old’s injury, with fans debating around it every matchday that he is not involved.
Tottenham received a positive update on Kolo Muani’s injury earlier this week when it was revealed that he participated in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Watford during this ongoing international break. The centre-forward got 45 minutes in his tank, and most importantly, he came through unscathed.
Now, reliable BBC Sports senior correspondent Sami Mokbel has shed further light on Kolo Muani’s injury and on his availability for Tottenham. In a Q&A session, a fan asked whether the player is suffering from a dead leg or any other unknown injury, and when will he become available to Thomas Frank. Sami Mokbel answered him:
“Painful! The good news is that Kolo Muani has played in a behind-closed-doors friendly versus Watford, completing 45 minutes as he makes his return to fitness.
“His pending availability will come as a significant boost to Frank, particularly given Solanke’s recent absence.”
It has been a frustrating start for Kolo Muani at Tottenham. The versatile forward’s progress has been hampered by a dead leg injury, though the good news is he played 45 minutes against Watford in a behind-closed-doors-friendly.
This means the Frenchman, who can play off the left flank, the lone striker upfront, or even second striker, is edging towards full match fitness. Getting 45 minutes in the tank is extremely positive for him and Spurs. If looked from the 26-year-old’s perspective, the October international break could not have been well-timed as it has given him extra time to recover and get some action without missing more action.
It remains to be seen whether Kolo Muani will be available to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.
