Greenock Morton officially sign Manchester United goalkeeper

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department has looked very different this summer following several important changes.

The arrivals of experienced stopper Karl Darlow and highly rated youngster Kit Margetson have strengthened the club’s options, while INEOS continue to focus on finding the right development pathway for academy talent.

Rather than allowing promising players to spend another year on the sidelines, United have continued using the loan market to expose youngsters to regular senior football.

That approach has already benefited several academy graduates in recent seasons, with the club believing competitive first-team minutes are crucial for long-term development.

Now another young Red has secured his next challenge away from Old Trafford.

Greenock Morton officially announce signing of Manchester United goalkeeper

Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton have officially confirmed, via their website, the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Elyh Harrison on a season-long loan, subject to SFA approval and registration.

The 20-year-old heads to Cappielow ahead of Morton’s opening league fixture this Saturday, where he is expected to compete for regular first-team football throughout the season.

Elyh Harrison already has experience of senior football after previous loan spells with Chester and Shrewsbury Town.

Last season, he spent the first half of the campaign with Shrewsbury before Manchester United recalled him in January, with the youngster subsequently featuring for the club’s Under-21 side while also providing cover for the senior squad.

Although opportunities at senior level were limited, Elyh Harrison still managed to register one clean sheet during his loan spell with Shrewsbury.

The young goalkeeper has also built valuable experience around Manchester United’s first team, earning several places on the senior matchday bench.

Internationally, Harrison has represented England at Under-20 level and remains one of the more highly regarded young goalkeepers to emerge from Carrington in recent years.

With United strengthening their goalkeeping department this summer and senior opportunities likely to remain limited, another season of regular football away from Old Trafford is viewed as the next important step in Harrison’s development.
