Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is staring at the barrel of the gun at N17. The Australian is under tremendous pressure to turn the club’s fortunes around and end the long-standing trophy drought this season. If things go to plan, the 59-year-old will bring European silverware back to N17 after 41 years. The ex-Celtic boss has the chance to do the unthinkable at the North London club after enduring a disastrous season.
But the domestic campaign has just not gone well for the Lilywhites. Spurs faced their 21st Premier League defeat of the season at the hands of Aston Villa on Friday night. Big Ange was playing his second-choice team against the Villains as the crucial Europa League final is just a few days away.
The North London club registered its 25th defeat in all competitions this season. In an ideal world, Ange Postecoglou would have been sacked a long time back at N17. But the Europa League has acted as the saving grace for the Australian as he looks to save his job at Spurs. The Lilywhites have broken all sorts of records this season and the Premier League form should be a concern as they head for the Europa League final.
Tottenham are linked with several managers to replace Ange Postecoglou. One of them is Burnley boss Scott Parker, who has helped The Clarets get automatic promotion to the Premier League for next season. It was reported earlier this week that Daniel Levy will sack Ange Postecoglou once the season ends, regardless of the outcome in the Europa League final.
But former Spurs winger Chris Waddle does not believe that Scott Parker is the ideal man to replace Ange Postecoglou at N17. Speaking to Football Insider, Waddle said,
“Is he a Tottenham-type manager? Listen, if he can win trophies, he’s a Tottenham-type manager. If he’s gonna be mid-table and it’s boring, Tottenham fans will not have it. So, will Scott Parker turn that into an attacking team that is exciting to watch what Tottenham fans will want to see? Hard job.”
The ex-Spurs player added,
“Now, Scott Parker I’m sure, been living in London, would love to get an opportunity to manage a club like Tottenham, but will it be a good decision for him? I don’t think it would.”
Chris Waddle suggests that Scott Parker would have to deliver trophies immediately at Tottenham and play attacking football. The ex-Spurs winger also insisted that the fans would not accept mid-table finishes. Waddle added that he does not think the current Burnley boss would turn the fortunes around at N17 and play exciting football. He also urged Scott Parker to reconsider the job offer as it would not be a good fit for him.
While Ange Postecoglou is on the verge of facing the axe at N17, Daniel Levy has already started looking at managerial replacements. Many fans believe that Scott Parker is not the right man for the job due to his failed stints in the Premier League with Fulham and Bournemouth. But the Englishman has done a wonderful job at Turf Moor this season and reached the 100-point mark to achieve automatic promotion to the top-flight.
Spurs are also linked with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Fulham manager Marco Silva. Both managers are ahead in the race to replace Big Ange at the helm and it is believed that Daniel Levy will land either of those two for next season. It is going to be an anxious wait for the fans, as they have a Europa league final to focus on before thinking about the potential managerial replacement.
