Everton brought Harrison Armstrong back from his loan spell at Preston in January.
He had been performing well there, and David Moyes needed cover due to injuries and players away at the Africa Cup of Nations, so he was recalled.
Since then, Armstrong has started four straight Premier League matches, making a strong impression on both Moyes and the Everton fans.
There had been talk that he might return to Preston now that Idrissa Gana Gueye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are available again, but a decision has now been made about what comes next for him.
Earlier in January, Moyes said the preferred plan was for Armstrong to remain on loan with the promotion-chasing Championship side.
“The truth is I would like him to go back to Preston,” Moyes explained. “I want Preston to get promoted. They’re in a really good position, they’re pushing for the play offs.”
But Armstrong’s form since returning has changed Moyes’ thinking. According to The Times journalist Paul Joyce, the teenager is now set to stay at Goodison Park.
Joyce reported: “Harrison Armstrong is to remain at Everton for the rest of the season. David Moyes had considered sending the 19-year-old back to Preston North End on loan but has been impressed with the midfielder who started the draw with Brighton.
“Everton plan to give Armstrong opportunities and believe he will help push for Europe.”
Since joining the first team, Armstrong has quickly caught the eye of James Garner, who spoke highly of the youngster earlier in the year.
“Yeah, Harrison’s a good lad,” Garner said.
“I’ve known him for a year or two now and he takes on information. And I always knew that he’d that he would eventually make his way into the team.
“You can see the quality that he’s got.
“You know, he’s still so young, but he plays very mature. So, yeah, I know he’s added a lot and I’m glad to have him back.”
The decision is also expected to hit Preston hard. Paul Heckingbottom had been preparing for Armstrong’s return to Deepdale before Everton changed course.
