Harry Amass January plans outlined amid impressive loan spell

Harry Amass has climbed quickly through the ranks at Manchester United, stepping up from the academy to making his debut, and now is on a senior loan with Sheffield Wednesday to bank minutes and harden his game.

The 17-year-old left-back has taken to the Championship well, earning regular selection and recently scoring his first professional goal while with the Owls, against recently relegated side Southampton, as his influence grows.

The logic behind the move was straightforward for Manchester United. Amass needed consistent senior football to accelerate development with a view to returning better prepared to compete at Old Trafford.

With the left-back being a consistent member of Wednesday’s starting eleven, his move is certainly meeting the criteria of the loan, so it’s no surprise that United’s stance on the rest of the season has now emerged.

Speaking on X, BBC Sheffield reporter Rob Staton addressed the situation, saying: “Per sources, understand Harry Amass will not be recalled by Manchester United in January. A big positive for Sheffield Wednesday, with the young loanee impressing greatly so far.”

For Sheffield Wednesday, it is a significant boost. Manager and staff can plan on having Amass through the second half of the season, maintaining continuity on the left and avoiding disruption as the team are fighting to get out of the relegation zone.

For Manchester United, the stance signals satisfaction with the loan. Leaving Amass at Hillsborough to complete a full campaign delivers exactly what was intended: starts, challenges against senior wingers, and a larger body of work to assess before pre-season.

With an eye on Old Trafford, Diogo Dalot has been used at left-back this season, while Patrick Dorgu has featured more from the bench as he settles. As such, the first-choice left-wing-back role under Ruben Amorim may not be as settled as first thought when Dorgu arrived from Lecce in January 2025.

Across the remainder of the season, the focus for Amass will be consistency in defensive duels, decision-making in transitions, and end product in the final third. If those trends continue, he returns in the summer with a genuine shot at competing for a place in Amorim’s plans.
