Harry Maguire assault trial looks to take new turn

Harry Maguire’s long-running legal case in Greece still traces back to a chaotic night in Mykonos in August 2020, when the Manchester United defender was arrested following an altercation involving his party and Greek police.

Maguire has consistently denied wrongdoing, with his defence maintaining the situation escalated after concerns for his sister’s safety and a confrontation outside a bar, before police became involved.

The version of events has been disputed from the start, with different accounts presented around what happened in the moments leading to the arrests.

A fast-tracked court hearing on the island of Syros later that month ended with Maguire being found guilty of charges including aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery, and he was handed a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days.

However, under Greek law, that conviction was automatically nullified once an appeal was lodged, meaning the case has been heading towards a retrial for years, with Maguire treated as innocent while the process continues.

Now, The Daily Mail has reported that the case could be set for another twist.

A retrial date of 4th March 2026 has been listed after the most recent hearing in Syros, having been scheduled for 8th October 2025 but was postponed again, with reports citing issues around court documents not being available in translated form.

That latest delay fits the pattern, with the process repeatedly interrupted by practical and legal backlogs, including disruption to court schedules in recent years.

There is also a longer-term clock running on the case. Reports in recent years have noted an eight-year statute of limitations, which would put a final deadline in August 2028 if the retrial does not take place before then.

For now, Harry Maguire does not need to attend the hearing on the 4th March in person, although the last few years suggest next week may not be the end of the whole saga..
