Harry Maguire banned by the FA

Just as Manchester United prepare for one of their biggest fixtures of the season, another setback has landed.

Harry Maguire will miss the trip to Chelsea after his Football Association misconduct charge was upheld, resulting in a one-game suspension and a fine, as reported by The Athletic.

The punishment stems from an incident following his red card against Bournemouth, where the 33-year-old was found to have sworn at fourth official Matt Donohue after being dismissed by referee Stuart Attwell for denying a goalscoring opportunity to Evanilson.

That sending-off had already ruled him out of the 2-1 defeat to Leeds United, and now the extended ban ensures he misses another crucial clash against Chelsea as United push for UEFA Champions League qualification.

The situation is made even worse by the absence of Lisandro Martinez, who is expected to serve a suspension following his own red card against Leeds after a VAR review led by John Brooks, with referee Paul Tierney ultimately dismissing him for a hair-pulling incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

United are appealing that decision, but as things stand, Carrick must plan without both of his senior centre-backs.

With Matthijs de Ligt still not ready to return from a long-term back injury, the United boss is now expected to turn to youth, handing responsibility to Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.

Heaven, just 19, has already shown flashes of composure beyond his years

He had a cameo in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

Yoro, meanwhile, has experienced a more difficult period, with recent performances, including Monday night against Leeds, raising questions about his consistency as he continues adapting to the demands of English football.

And the task in front of them could hardly be tougher.

Joao Pedro has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers this season, registering 19 goals and 9 assists, and his movement and physicality are expected to test United’s inexperienced defensive pairing.

The Brazilian forward will look to unsettle both Yoro and Heaven, dragging them out of position and forcing mistakes, making him a major threat Carrick’s side must contain if they are to leave Stamford Bridge with a result.

That leaves Carrick facing a serious defensive gamble in a match that could define United’s season.

Despite the growing list of absentees, the objective remains clear.

United know that victory over Chelsea would be a huge step toward securing Champions League football next season, but with their defensive core depleted and Joao Pedro waiting, the margin for error has never been smaller.
