Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has managed to do the unthinkable as the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy comes to an end. The Lilywhites defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the final and it was a sight for sore eyes when the referee blew the final whistle. The North London club have also ensured Champions League football for next season.
As for Ange Postecoglou, the Spurs manager had come under a lot of scrutiny in recent months for the poor performances in the Premier League. But the Australian answered the critics in his own way and managed to come out victorious. The ex-Celtic boss was always confident of turning around the fortunes at N17, and he did just that after bringing a European trophy back to N17 after 41 years.
The Lilywhites came into the game as the slight underdogs. However, it is important to note how Big Ange changed his style and setup to carve out a victory. There was no sign of “Ange-Ball” and Spurs chose to defend the goal well and sit back instead. Manchester United came close to scoring several times in the second half, but the resilience shown by Ange’s men proved to be the ultimate game changer.
There is no surprise that the Europa League was acting as a saving grace for Ange Postecoglou at N17. The Australian was staring at the barrel of the gun at Tottenham after enduring a disastrous domestic campaign. However, it is fair to say that this might just be the best season Spurs fans have endured in years. Big Ange managed to exceed all expectations and bring home the Europa League trophy.
Now, Spurs legend Gareth Bale has backed Ange Postecoglou to stay at Hotspur Way following the Europa League success. Speaking to TNT Sports, Bale said,
“I think only the chairman can decide [whether he stays], to be honest. There’s been so much talk about whether he goes or whether he doesn’t. I guess it’ll be interesting to see that because he’s won a trophy, the first Tottenham manager to do so in a long time. So I guess the board has some decisions to make. I like the football that he plays.”

The Spurs legend added,
“Obviously he lacks a bit of a plan B. But tonight showed there is a plan B. There’s a different side to how he’s played. So I guess if he also matures as a manager and brings that defensive side to his teams, of course he can still have great success here.”
Gareth Bale was quick to suggest that only Daniel Levy has the power to decide whether Ange Postecoglou stays at N17 or not. The Spurs legend also added that everyone will focus on what Levy decides to do as Big Ange has now delivered a trophy in his second season. Bale also insisted that Ange Postecoglou showed he could adapt to different situations. The Welshman backed Big Ange to be successful at Tottenham if he managed to bring a defensive side to his setup and mature in his game management.
Now, Ange Postecoglou has delivered on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season. All eyes will be on Daniel Levy as the Spurs chairman has got a big decision to make. It was reported earlier that Levy would sack Big Ange once the season ended, irrespective of the outcome in the Europa League final. But now, the Spurs chairman might need to reconsider his stance on the Australian and do what is best for the club.
