'He owes me $200 right now': Carlos Alcaraz sends message to Sergio Garcia after beating Spanish icon in golf match

Carlos Alcaraz is back in the US Open final for the second time in his career — but it wasn’t just his tennis doing the talking in New York this week. The Spaniard revealed he picked up a victory of a very different kind during his two days off, this time on the golf course against close friend and Spanish golfing legend Sergio García.

After defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets, Alcaraz was asked about his serve and his confidence going into Sunday’s final. He admitted he wasn’t at his absolute best, but felt he produced exactly what was required. He saw off Djokovic at the US Open 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 and likely will face on paper a certain Jannik Sinner who faces Felix Auger-Aliassime later tonight at around 1am CET for the right to face Alcaraz.

But it was different bragging rights that Alcaraz went on to speak about in his on-court interview, those being on the golf course as he beat Spanish icon, Sergio Garcia he confirmed albeit the golfer had a handicap and for someone skilled already with a golf club, Alcaraz had an advantage.

He had one again today against Djokovic and while not at his best was comfortable at certain junctures as despite not playing badly, the 38-year-old's time is seemingly running out to claim Grand Slam No.25.

“Well, yeah, it’s a great feeling. Once again, the final here in the US Open, it feels amazing, to be honest. It means a lot to me,” he said. “Today, I’d say it wasn’t the best level of the tournament for me, but I just kept a good level from the beginning until the last point. I served pretty well today, and I think that was really, really important.

“Being there, trying to play a really physical match, I think I did it. In general, I just played really good tennis, and I’m just really happy to be able to play my second final here at the US Open.”

But while Alcaraz was content with his form on the court, it was his triumph on the fairways that he was most eager to share. “You had two days off, but I heard you actually had a win during those two days against your good buddy Sergio García on the golf course. Can you tell me about that one?” he was asked.

The 21-year-old grinned as he delivered his reply. “He owes me $200 right now. Yeah, I had two days, and I played a game with Sergio, with David, and they’re here with Juanqui as well. I played with David, we beat them, so it was a good day. We were talking about how many strokes he had to give me…”

For context, Sergio Garcia revealed that Alcaraz beat him in a friendly match earlier this week. "Yeah we played a doubles match," Garcia said to GolfMagic.

"It was Carlos Alcaraz and David Puig in the Fireballs, and Juan Carlos Ferrero and myself. We gave Carlos 18 shots and we gave Juan Carlos nine, and they beat us 1up on 18. We had a good time, it was nice, it was a tight match!"

When pressed to repeat the story so the press could hear the full details, Alcaraz doubled down with a laugh: “They didn’t hear? They didn’t hear? What I say is I won. $400 I won. So that’s all you should know.”

So while Garcia didn't have his pride hurt and was fine telling the story, Alcaraz wasn't as coy about gloating about his win over the Spanish golf icon. Likely the same can be said for his epic US Open win over Djokovic.
