Despite netting 20 goals across all competitions last season, Chris Sutton has urged Celtic striker Adam Idah to deliver more consistent performances ahead of the campaign kicking off this weekend…

After impressing on loan during the second half of the 2023/24 season, Idah completed his permanent move from English Championship side Norwich City for £9 million last summer. While the Irishman has scored numerous times for Celtic in both domestic and European matches, he was not consistently chosen as a starter by Brendan Rodgers last season.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda both led the line last season

Rodgers instead opted to deploy Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda as the central forwards at various points throughout last campaign.

Although Idah has recently expressed confidence in reaching the 30 goals mark for Celtic this coming season, Sutton believes he needs to improve his personal contributions on the pitch.

Speaking on the Warm-Up Show Podcast, Sutton said: “He has to be confident. The bottom line with Adam is that numbers-wise last season, he did really well, but I still think he has to show greater consistency. I think he knows that.”

“The bottom line is, Kyogo went and Idah came in, got goals in the Champions League and performed well. But then in other games, Brendan didn’t play him.”

Sutton added: “That tells you everything you need to know about where Brendan’s at. He could be cleaner at times in some of his link-up play, and there are improvements to be had, but he will know that. He is a threat, and you just hope it all comes together for him.”

“When he first came, he proved me wrong in terms of his finishing. Over the piece, Brendan’s happy with him at Celtic, but Celtic needs to bring another striker in. It doesn’t matter me saying that; Brendan said the same thing in January.”
