Manchester United defender Harry Maguire praised Casemiro for playing a vital role in their victory over Athletic Club on Thursday. The Red Devils beat Athletic 0-3 in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals at Estadio de San Mames.
United have endured a horrible season in the Premier League as the Europa League remains their only source of salvation. Potentially winning the competition would also secure their Champions League spot for the next season under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Champions League would also help them secure better transfer targets in the summer and add to their struggling finances. The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League table after suffering 15 losses from 34 games this season.
Speaking to MUTV (via Manchester Evening News), Maguire highlighted the role that Casemiro played for United against Athletic on Thursday. He said:
“I think Casemiro was brilliant tonight. I definitely believe he was the Man of the Match. He was everywhere and he scored a crucial goal as well. I think the header was a lot more difficult than he made it look; there was spin on the ball from Manu’s header. It was a great, controlled finish.”
Casemiro scored the opening goal of the night against Athletic, which kick-started United’s momentum during the game. The 33-year-old has faced severe criticism for lacking the energy and quality that made him one of the best midfielders.
However, his performance showed that the Brazil captain is not completely past his prime yet. According to Fotmob, Casemiro won the most duels (nine) during the game, highlighting his presence all over the midfield.
The 33-year-old enjoyed 85% passing accuracy from 87 attempted passes, along with 109 touches, which shows his influence for United. Furthermore, the 33-year-old made 100% successful dribbles and won two tackles with five clearances and one interception.
Casemiro also made two clearances through his header and completed 10 defensive actions, along with making six recoveries. The Red Devils need Casemiro to maintain his form until the end of the season for the club to achieve the Europa League success.
