Was it wrong of Tottenham to sack Ange Postecoglou after the Europa League success? Only time will if the decision was right or not. But one thing is for certain… Big Ange will forever be remembered fondly at N17 after he walked the talk and ended the club’s long-standing trophy drought last month. Ange’s men exceeded all expectations and became European champions against all odds.
Not only that, but the Lilywhites also managed to ensure Champions League qualification by winning the competition. Many fans thought this would be a turning point in the North London club’s history after years of heartbreak and frustration. The Australian was also adamant to build on the Europa League success next year after enduring constant scrutiny from the media.
The ex-Celtic boss also announced during the victory speech that ‘season three’ would be better than the previous two seasons combined. But Daniel Levy thought otherwise and sacked Ange Postecoglou just two weeks after the historic result. The decision to relieve Big Ange from his duties was due to the disastrous domestic campaign that the North London club endured.
Daniel Levy finally had the chance of building a connection with the fans following the Europa League success. But his decision to sack Ange Postecoglou has not been taken well by the fans and many have questioned the club chairman’s ambitions at N17. It was reported earlier that the Spurs players were planning a revolt against the club’s hierarchy following Big Ange’s dismissal, with many players keen to leave the club immediately.
Now, famous pundit Ally McCoist also believes that the decision to sack the Australian tactician was ‘harsh.’ Speaking on talkSPORT (via X), McCoist said,
“I don’t think it was the right decision to get rid of Ange, to be honest with you. That’s the first thing I would say. I know the league position’s unacceptable. I totally get that, but I feel he made it crystal clear, he threw all his eggs in the one basket towards the end of the season. In my opinion, I think he was unlucky with injuries as well.”
"Harsh on Big Ange!"

The pundit added,
“That said, the level of performance in the league was not good enough, or anything like good enough. I understand that. However, the pluses for me far, far outweigh the minuses. To win a European trophy in I don’t know how many years, and get them into the Champions League next year, I thought that gave him enough credit in the bank and keep his job at the very least. I still think it’s harsh on big Ange, I really do.”
Ally McCoist insisted that Tottenham took the wrong decision by sacking Ange Postecoglou after the Australian led the team to European success. The pundit acknowledged that the league form was not good, but also added that Big Ange was unlucky with the injury crisis at the club. McCoist believes that delivering a trophy and ensuring Champions League football next year outweigh the unacceptable league form.
However, the decision has been taken and the Lilywhites need to move on quickly following the 59-year-old’s departure. Spurs are on the verge of hiring Thomas Frank as their new manager in the coming days. If all things go to plan, then the Danish tactician will look to kickstart anew era at N17 and build on the Europa League success next season.
