Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has quickly made a name for himself in the Premier League. It is fair to suggest that the Argentina international has become a fan-favourite at N17 due to his consistent performances and his ability to step up in big games. The 27-year-old recently made history with the club as the Lilywhites ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League.
One of many positive take-outs from the final against Man United was Romero’s performance. The Spurs No.17 was solid and did not let anyone get by him as the North London club registered a rare clean sheet in the biggest game of the season. His performance in the final earned a token of appreciation from United winger Alejandro Garnacho as well.
The defender endured a ‘stop-start’ campaign and missed crucial games last season. But it was clear to see that the Lilywhites performed better when the ex-Atalanta star was on the pitch. His leadership skills to manage the backline, and his impact in the dressing room is something that Spurs cannot replace easily.
Tottenham cannot afford to lose a key player in Cristian Romero for next season as the club looks to build on the Europa League success. It was reported earlier that Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is desperate to sign the Argentinian in the summer and is willing to test the waters by submitting a low-ball offer for his services.
Now, John Wenham has urged Spurs to pull out all stops and keep the 27-year-old at N17 for next season. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“These fees that Atletico were leaking to the Spanish press were never going to push the needle. Romero is now worth double what we signed him for. If we were trying to sign him from Atletico, they would want £100m. Therefore, if they don’t have the money, he can’t go. It’s as simple as that.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“Now, for Tottenham, it is about desperately trying to get him to renew his contract. Yes, there was some frustration about the number of games he missed last season. However, when you look at it in isolation, he was superb against Frankfurt and in the final. He’s a winner, and we need to keep those players around at the club.”
John Wenham has suggested that Atletico Madrid’s low-ball offer will not work as Cristian Romero is worth more than what the Spanish giants are offering. The Lilywhite Rose owner also pointed out that Atleti would have sold the 27-year-old for £100m if it was the other way round. Wenham has now urged Spurs to renew Romero’s contract, despite his injury issues, as he is a ‘winner’ and the North London club will only benefit by keeping him at N17.
There is no doubt that Spurs would like to have Cristian Romero’s presence at the back next season. Thomas Frank’ setup will allow the centre-back to take up positions that would suit his playing style. Not only that, but the 27-year-old’s weaknesses would not be highlighted under the Danish tactician, as the Lilywhites would be pragmatic in their approach against good teams.
