Tottenham Hotspur had been looking to bring in a striker along the whole summer transfer window, but none of the transfers materialised until Daniel Levy pulled off a deadline-day surprise when the Lilywhites signed Randal Kolo Muani.
Most of the supporters felt that the club would be going into the season with Dominic Solanke and Richarlison as their primary striking options, with Mathys Tel adding the depth. So when the North Londoners made a move to bring the French international in the final hours of the deadline day, it felt like a big win.
But if we look at things behind the scenes, everything pointed towards him securing that highly anticipated transfer to Juventus until Tottenham came in at the eleventh hour to swoop away his signatures. Then Juve manager Igor Tudor was pushing his employers to sign the 26-year-old striker. But Juventus missed out, and Tudor (who is out of a job now) didn’t get his man.
Juventus were playing it patiently; they thought they could wait out PSG in securing a move for Kolo Muani. It was a smart move to drag things out until the Parisian club blinked. And maybe that would have worked if Tottenham had not come into the picture and gone away with a deal in the final hours of the window.
And instead the Premier League heavyweights got their man. A move which saw the North Londoners secure someone they have been vying for for a long time. And Juventus were left scrambling.
Now, according to Sportmediaset (as relayed by Sport Witness), that “missed opportunity” to sign Kolo Muani is regarded as something which became a decisive factor in what eventually led to the Croatian manager departing the Serie A giants.
Igor Tudor has made it clear that he wants Muani in his roster for the new season. He was banking on his return. But without Muani, who had netted eight times for Juve while on loan, he couldn’t put through his philosophy in the same manner. There was a belief at Juventus that Jonathan David and Lois Openda will end up stepping up, given how both of them have demonstrated goal-scoring qualities, but the pair have been underwhelming.
Something like this also makes you understand Spurs’ pull. Muani wanted to go to Juventus; they wanted to sign him, but when Tottenham swooped in, he ended up making a move to Hotspur Way. And while he has not been able to get his feet rolling for his new employers, the supporters at N17 would hope that he does it sooner rather than later.
