The second round of the group stage of the Champions League saw different match-ups between the best European teams. Some giants, like Real Madrid, got to face opponents significantly below their level. Others, like Barcelona, had to try their strengths against the reigning European Champions, Paris Saint-Germain. The 90 minutes against the Parisian team proved to be their downfall.
Paris Saint-Germain, without a doubt one of the strongest European teams, was decimated by injuries, with some of their biggest stars, like Ousmane Dembele, not able to participate in the match. This gave Barcelona a chance to put their best foot forward against the Parisians. They began the game well, able to stay in control of the situation on the field.
Barcelona’s efforts paid off in the 19th minute. It was then that, after a great pass from Pedri, Marcus Rashford put the ball right by Ferran Torres’ feet. El Tiburon didn’t waste the opportunity and put his team in the lead.
Barcelona’s good match began unraveling around half an hour after the kick-off. After a nasty foul on Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, Frankie de Jong was shown a yellow card. This meant that, for the remainder of the game, he needed to be more careful and less aggressive on the field.
Things went from bad to worse for the Catalan team when Senny Mayulu, assisted by Mendes, equalized the score. Barcelona tried to push back and regain the lead, but couldn’t seem to find its footing after conceding a goal. The only thing that could brighten the Culers’ mood was Mendes being shown a yellow card for fouling Lamine Yamal.
The second half of the match was completely dominated by the Parisians. Barcelona’s players seemed to lose their focus during the short break and came out onto the field much weaker than they had been throughout the first 45 minutes. They did regain some composure as the game went on, but Paris Saint-Germain was clearly the stronger of the two teams.
Despite Barca’s lackluster performance, the game seemed to be heading for a 1-1 draw. That was until the 90th minute, in which Goncalo Ramos put the ball in Wojciech Szczęsny’s net after an assist from Achraf Hakimi. A few minutes were added to the standard time, but it wasn’t enough time for Barcelona to retaliate. When the final whistle sounded off around Barcelona, they had to kiss their dream of adding any points to their Champions League tally goodbye.
The team that has not yet been defeated in La Liga during the 2025/26 season couldn’t keep the same streak in the European Championship. After the match, Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s coach, admitted that Blaugrana was not quite on Paris Saint-Germain’s level. He also claimed that the defeat didn’t mean that Barca should be dismissed.
“But I believe in my team (…) We could see the level of PSG, and I’m 100% sure we can also play like this” ( Flick during the post-game press conference)
His words spark hope for a better season for the Catalan team, despite the disappointing defeat. The next Champions League game, this one against Olympiacos, will show where the team stands among their European rivals.
