Sandro Tonali got tangled up with Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike last night, suffering an injury that may prevent him from playing for the Italy national team in September.
Italy star Tonali suffered a shoulder injury in the second half of Newcastle’s 3-2 loss against Liverpool on Monday, and the Magpies’ boss Eddie Howe described the midfielder’s issue as “threatening.”
The former Milan midfielder was forced off the pitch at minute 66 after he got tangled up with Liverpool forward Ekitike in an incident off the ball.
Tonali and Ekitike pulled each other, causing the Italian midfielder to fall on his left side. Ekiteke showed no intention to hurt the Azzurri star, who still ended up on the losing side of the physical clash.
It remains to be seen how long Tonali will be ruled out for, especially considering that Gennaro Gattuso will name his Italy squad for games against Estonia and Israel before the weekend.
The new Azzurri coach will make his debut on the Italy bench on September 5 in Bergamo against Estonia.
Tonali has 25 international appearances and two goals to his name.
