The quote from Antoine Semenyo is one from the archive. It’s from a candid interview he did with The Athletic back in October 2024, where he opened up about his lifelong love for Arsenal despite facing them as an opponent. However. It could be decades old when it comes to football fans looking for an angle to pass comment on a player.
Suddenly this feels like another Eberechi Eze situation where his heart lies with Arsenal. Will this send Tottenham searching for an alternative?
Spurs have undoubtedly shown a strong interest in Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, the 25-year-old Ghanaian winger who has scored six goals and provided three assists in the opening Premier League matches of the 2025/26 season.
However, his £75m+ valuation and competition from clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United could make a deal challenging, to put it mildly.
Rather ironically. this isn’t the worst example of Spurs finding themselves with a ‘red under the bed’. Harry Kane was an Arsenal supporter during his childhood and spent four years in the club’s youth academy starting at age 8, where he was described as a “fanatical” fan. However, at age 12, he was released by Arsenal’s assistant academy manager Roy Massey, who felt he wasn’t up to standard as a striker.
After the rejection, Kane returned to his local Sunday League side, Ridgeway Rovers, before joining Tottenham Hotspur’s academy at age 11.
Fan reaction online has been mixed, to put it mildly.
Buffet Announcement on Reddit said: We do not want him. And him publicly stating he’s a gooner means he doesn’t mind burning bridges with us
Genral Document added: people need a calm down, Terry was a United fan Carra/ Owen an Everton fan Solskjaer a Liverpool fan, Raul was an Atlético fan, Bale was an Arsenal fan
Yougitabeeonyourhat perhaps made the most sense: I think a lot of footballers from this generation probably grew up with the Arsenal of the early 00s, who won a lot, and then in the mid to late 00s they played attractive football with a lot of flair players, compared to Utd and Chelsea. Also, Arsenal had quite a lot of prominent black players in that period, which probably resonated with a lot of people at that time, having those figures to look up to. Hopefully in years to come players will talk about how they fell in love with Kane, Son, Dele and co!
If Spurs do make a move, a short, sharp quote of clarity from the man himself would set minds at rest?
