Chelsea suffered heartbreak in their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City as they went down to a 1-0 defeat despite putting in an admirable performance. After that, their veteran defender Thiago Silva had an interesting revelation regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.

Thiago Silva Makes Admission On Chelsea Future

What Did Silva Say About His Future At Chelsea?

The 39-year-old centre-back is seeing his Chelsea contract about to expire at the end of June 2024 and will become a free agent unless offered another deal. For the time being, the Blues have not offered him a new contract.

Silva has spoken about his situation at Stamford Bridge and told the Evening Standard: “You are going to know in the coming days. I don’t want to say anything now after a defeat. I’m sad about the result, but sooner or later, the news will come out. I do have a decision made in my mind, but it’s not the moment to share it.”

After producing an admirable performance in the loss to the Cityzens, Silva insisted that he does not see himself retiring after this season and added: “My four years here were very good. Not that I didn’t believe in myself, but with my age and the intensity of this league…it’s rare to see players in a high level at 39. I don’t like to talk about myself, but you can see this. Today, I was ready to play the extra time! I can see I have some years in me to keep enjoying football.”

Who Could Replace Thiago Silva?

At this point, it doesn’t seem like the Brazilian centre-back will renew his deal and stay at the London club beyond this campaign. Chelsea were reported to be looking to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window but decided against it after failing to sell Trevoh Chalobah. They have been linked with a potential transfer for Sporting CP centre-back Ousmande Diomande and will also have Wesley Fofana back into the fray in the 2024/25 season.

However, the Blues must work smartly to find a composed centre-back like Silva, who also boasts impressive leadership qualities. He was hailed as “amazing” for his heroics in the 2022/23 season and was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season. Since joining Chelsea in 2020 as a free agent, he has made 149 appearances and won the UEFA Champions League title with them in 2021.
