‘I was amazed’: Player ‘gave up the money’ to join Tottenham this month

Tottenham Hotspur completed a deal to sign Radu Dragusin from Genoa and the move was officially confirmed by the North London club yesterday.

The 21-year-old has impressed with his performances in Italian football and he will look to make his mark in England now.

The Italian club delayed the official announcement of the transfer because they were entitled to pay him a bonus. However, they were not willing to cough up the money easily. Dragusin eventually decided to let go of the payment and finalise the move with the North London club.

The player’s agent has now confirmed to Digi Sport that the defender ‘gave up the money’ in order to push through a move to the London club.

“There were some details to work out with Genoa. They have been resolved and we will announce Radu soon at Tottenham. He had some bonuses to take at Genoa. I was amazed by that, but it doesn’t matter,” he told Digi Sport.

“They took €30m and are negotiating at several tens of thousands. The documents are signed. He has to sign them too. They’re going to let him know. He made yesterday’s visit. I was waiting at 9am for him to let him know, but I slept. I told you what the problem was. If they signed, they had to give him the bonuses.”

There have been rumours that Dragusin chose to turn down a move to Bayern Munich as well. It is evident that the 21-year-old defender was very keen on a move to Tottenham and he will be determined to make a success of the transfer.

Tottenham needed to bring a quality central defender and the Romanian should prove to be a solid, long-term acquisition. He has shown his qualities in the Italian league and he will hope to establish himself as a top class defender in the Premier League now.

It will be interesting to see if he can make an immediate impact and help Tottenham tighten up at the back. The North London outfit will need to improve defensively in order to secure Champions League qualification.
