Alfie Dorrington opens up on his Tottenham future and offers Aberdeen hope for another loan

Now that the 2024/25 Premier League season has ended, Tottenham Hotspur have some big decisions to make in the coming days, weeks and months.

Daniel Levy’s first and foremost priority is to resolve Ange Postecoglou’s future at the club. The Australian has fulfilled the club’s objective of winning a trophy and securing Champions League football, yet there have been doubts over his future.

Once the managerial situation is sorted, Levy must make a concrete decision over the players in the current squad. It remains to be seen which players will be let go as part of the squad’s expected revamp in the summer. Moving forward, a decision on the players out on loan will also need to be taken.

One of the players to go out on loan this season was Alfie Dorrington. The youngster made his senior Tottenham debut against Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium in December 2024, coming on as a substitute in the 5-0 win. Despite being in and around the first team for a long time, and senior defenders missing due to injury problems then, Tottenham decided to loan him out during the January transfer window.

Alfie Dorrington signed a new contract with Spurs until 2029 and joined Scottish side Aberdeen on loan until the end of the season. He has made 16 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring a goal. The Dons claimed a shock victory over Celtic at Hampden Park last weekend to win the Scottish Cup.

The centre-back started the game but unfortunately scored an own goal as Cameron Carter-Vickers’ header deflected off him and past his goalkeeper in the 39th minute. He was substituted in the 80th minute. However, Aberdeen equalised in the 83rd minute via a Kasper Schmeichel own goal, before winning the Scottish Cup via a penalty shootout 5-4.

Speaking after the game, Dorrington shed some light on his future. He insisted the decision on his future lies with Tottenham, although revealed he’d love to join the Dons again if they came back with another loan offer.

“Obviously, I love the city, I love the club, the staff, the players. I love Tottenham as well. They’re kind of in charge of what I do. I’d be grateful if Aberdeen came back in for me but it’s all in Tottenham’s hands,” the 20-year-old was quoted by Football London.

Dorrington will be one of many young defenders who’d be returning to the North London club from loan. The other centre-backs who are also set to return to Spurs are Luka Vuskovic and Ashley Phillips.

Vuskovic had a stellar season with Belgian club Westerlo, netting a staggering seven goals and registering three assists on top of that in 36 appearances. Phillips, meanwhile, made 35 Championship appearances in Stoke City colours this past season. At this moment, both Vuskovic and Phillips are ahead of Dorrington in terms of development and experience.

So, we may well see Dorrington leave on loan again, perhaps this time for the entire 2025/26 season. And if Aberdeen wants to borrow the Enfield-born talent once more, the Tottenham chiefs should be happy to let him go.
