Tottenham need to address a lot of problems on the pitch before next season commences. But the main priority should be to revamp the backline and bring in defensive reinforcements in the summer. The Lilywhites struggled massively at the back last season, and it was one of the main reasons why Ange Postecoglou ended up getting the sack once the campaign ended.
Numerous injuries to key defenders and lack of squad depth to cover the position meant that Big Ange was forced to play inexperienced players in unfamiliar positions. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven missed most parts of the campaign through long-term injury and were forced to sit on the sidelines.
Backup defender Radu Dragusin also ruptured his ACL earlier this year, and reports suggest that the Romania international might be heading for the exit doors in the summer. Thomas Frank also relies heavily on his centre-backs for build-up, so all eyes will be on Daniel Levy to bring in a quality defender in the coming weeks.
It was reported earlier that Tottenham were one of the many clubs interested in signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi in the summer. The England international has enjoyed a wonderful campaign with the Eagles, and is keen to head out for a new challenge in the summer. But the asking price for the 24-year-old is deemed to be high, as Palace will not agree a penny less than £45m for his services.
Now, ex-PL manager Martin Allen has urged Guehi to see out his contract at Selhurst Park and sign for a new club next year with a huge signing-on fee. Speaking to Tottenham News, Allen said,
“With Guehi, his contract is up in a year’s time. He could play for Crystal Palace in the Premier League and in Europe for another year. He’s probably worth about £45m as a centre-back. If he has another good season, next summer he could say to any club, ‘I’ll sign for you, but you’ll have to pay me £40m.’”
The ex-PL manager added,
“So the player can pick up that money himself, rather than it being a transfer fee. If I were him, I could stay at Palace, play there and then ask for crazy amounts of money from clubs, like Tottenham, who are getting a good deal, not paying a fee.”
Martin Allen suggested that Marc Guehi could end up staying at Crystal Palace and still play European football next season. The ex-PL manager added that the England international is worth around £45m and he could ask for that money next year as a signing-on fee if he sees out his contract at Selhurst Park. Allen insisted that Guehi should follow this route and ask for ‘crazy’ money next year as clubs would not have to pay a transfer fee to Palace.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace. It is clear that the England international would fit in well at N17 alongside Micky van de Ven. Thomas Frank’s setup of playing three centre-backs will also bring out the best in the 24-year-old, as he likes to operate as a left-sided CB in a back three. His passing range, positional awareness, and ability to play out from the back will make him an instant success under Thomas Frank.
