Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby has further worsened the situation at Tottenham Hotspur, putting the new interim boss, Igor Tudor, already under serious pressure.
Spurs were given a 4-1 hiding by Mikel Arteta’s side, with Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres both scoring braces to help the visitors complete a league double this season. Having only recently taken the reins at White Hart Lane, Igor Tudor couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start. He admitted after the game that there is a gulf in quality between the two sides, although the Croat reiterated that Tottenham will not get relegated under his watch.
Randal Kolo Muani was perhaps the only bright spot in the big loss to the Gunners, with his first Premier League strike drawing Tottenham level in the first half. However, the rest of the players were simply not up to the mark and failed to perform, despite knowing it was a high-stakes derby.
Tudor has been brought in until the end of the season with the sole intention of retaining Tottenham’s top-flight status. After the North London derby, the 47-year-old has just 11 games left to weave his magic as a firefighter and drag his team far away from the jaws of relegation.
The Croat was visibly frustrated with his team for not fulfilling his tactical demands on Sunday, and ex-scout Bryan King thinks Tudor needs to warn his players with a summer exit to see if that can spark a reaction.
“His main job is to get the discipline back into the team and get the players to play for the badge,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“The last six months have been painful watching Spurs’ demise.
“They’ve been hugely fortunate in the Champions League as well. Tudor has to make them into a team; he’s got to up the level of training.
“He’s already brought in his staff, and he needs a strong mind to tell the players where they currently stand. The players who don’t step up to the plate need to be told they’ll be at another club next season, and maybe they’ll buck up their ideas.”
There are several players whose futures at N17 are hanging in the balance, and if Tottenham get relegated, it will guarantee their departures. It already feels like a huge overhaul is on the cards, even if Tudor manages to keep the club in the first tier of English football.
Fans have already given up on certain players, and their voices will only grow louder if the team fails to turn up in the upcoming games. While Tudor is here until the end of the season, he could have a big say on the futures of Tottenham players.
Knowing very well that a permanent successor to Thomas Frank will be appointed in the summer, it is high time the current group of boys understand the magnitude of the situation the club currently finds itself in and step up their performance levels.
