Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has silenced his critics in the best way possible

Ange Postecoglou has managed to end Tottenham Hotspur’s long-standing trophy drought this season. The Lilywhites beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa league final to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy on Wednesday night. The players showed hunger, fight, and desire to get over the line and end the season on a high after enduring a disastrous domestic campaign.

A lot was riding on the game against the Red Devils. It is fair to say that Ange Postecoglou’s future depended on the outcome in the final. But the Australian rose to the occasion and delivered success after exceeding all expectations. The 59-year-old has now given himself the best chance of staying beyond this season and continue his project at N17.

After enduring a lot of scrutiny from the media and the fans, Big Ange has well and truly silenced his critics in the best way possible. The ex-Celtic boss also delivered on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season. Although the Lilywhites were on the backfoot for most parts of the game against United, they did their defensive duties well and showed the grit needed to get over the line.

Ange Postecoglou adamant to stay at Tottenham for next season

There is no surprise that Daniel Levy had already started looking at potential managers that could replace Ange Postecoglou at the end of the season. It was reported earlier that Levy would sack Big Ange once the season ended, irrespective of the outcome in the Europa League final. But now, the Spurs chairman will need to think hard before deciding the Australian’s future.

But as far as Ange Postecoglou is concerned, the Spurs manager is adamant to stay at the helm and continue his project. Speaking in his post-match presser (as transcribed by Football.london), Big Ange said,

“Look, I think I said yesterday, I am pretty kind of not relaxed. Relaxed is not the word because I would be disappointed if we couldn’t continue on this path, but it’s not a criticism. I understand why it would be difficult for a club like this to buy into one person’s vision.”

The Spurs manager added,

“I remember even when I signed, the club and even Daniel said, ‘we went after winners, it didn’t work and now we’ve got Ange,’ but mate, I’m a winner. I have been a serial-winner my whole career.”

Ange Postecoglou insisted that he could understand why Tottenham would go for a different manager in the summer after a dismal domestic campaign. But the Australian also added that he would be disappointed if the North London club will not give him a chance to build on the Europa League win. The Spurs manager also added that he has always been a winner and he would continue to win trophies at any club he goes to.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is still believed to relieve Ange Postecoglou from his duties in the summer. It was reported earlier that Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli are the favourites to replace Big Ange at the helm next season.

Whatever happens from here on, Ange Postecoglou will always be remembered for breaking the curse at N17 and ending the long-standing trophy drought at the club. The Australian will be remembered fondly by the fans and he could leave Hotspur Way with his head held high.
