In drastic move, wobbling Bayern Munich fires coach

Bayern Munich has fired coach Julian Nagelsmann after a wild Bundesliga week that saw the 10-time consecutive champions fall behind Borussia Dortmund in the German season standings.

The club confirmed that Thomas Tuchel will replace Nagelsmann.

"After the World Cup, we played less successfully and less attractively," Bayern sporting director Oliver Kahn said in a statement. "The big fluctuations in performance have cast doubt on our goals for this season, but also our goals for the future."

Nagelsmann joined Bayern in 2021. He came from Hoffenheim, whom he joined in 2016 as the youngest coach in Bundesliga history, and RB Leipzig, whom he led to the semifinals of the Champions League. Only 35, the notoriously mercurial Nagelsmann still has plenty of coaching ahead of him.

Tottenham Hotspur fans may hope that Nagelsmann chooses to continue that journey in North London. The club is expected to part ways with coach Antonio Conte and could use Nagelsmann's focus, energy and attack-minded tactics.

But Paris Saint-Germain may be in the market for his skills, too. Nagelsmann's Bayern eliminated PSG from the Champions League this year, and if the club's Qatari board refuses to back coach Christophe Galtier after that defeat, Nagelsmann could be an ideal replacement.

For Bayern, though, Tuchel is hardly a compromise. The German coach won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 by defeating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City -- coincidentally the very team Bayern must beat to move forward in this season's tournament.

While many linked Tuchel with the Spurs job, new reports suggest that he never even spoke with the leadership team at the London club.

Tuchel will take over training at Bayern on Monday. This means that his first game in charge will be against Borussia Dortmund -- the team leading Bayern in the Bundesliga. It's a must-win game for both sides as they seek to win the closest Bundesliga title fight in a decade.

Time is tight, but Bayern will hope that this drastic coaching change will give it the edge to emerge victorious.
