Tottenham Hotspur travel to Aston Villa in a pivotal top four clash with five points separating the two sides. Spurs also have a game in hand on Villa and will be eager to close the gap on Unai Emery’s side. Here is Last Word on Sports’ Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup.

How Tottenham Hotspur Have Lined-up Recently

The Lilywhites have kept a fairly regular lineup recently, with Vicario Guglielmo marshalling his defence which consists of the solid centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Emerson Royal was brought into the starting XI last time out due to Pedro Porro’s injury. Destiny Udogie also made his first start after his injury.

In midfield, Postecoglou surprised many Spurs fans by starting Yves Bissouma instead of Pape Sarr in the previous fixture. Sarr has been a regular in the midfield but could only make a substitute appearance against Crystal Palace. Rodrigo Bentancur has continued to start in the heart of the Lilywhites midfield.

James Maddison has made a big impact with his regular starts since his return from injury. He features in that central attacking midfield role with the freedom to roam and use all his creative powers to create and score goals. On either side of him Dejan Kulusevski and Timo Werner seem to be the most preferred wingers for Postecoglou. This has especially been the case since Richarlison’s injury.

Son led the line against Crystal Palace, adding Tottenham’s third goal, with Richarlison sprinting from his position on the bench to celebrate with his teammates. The Brazilian had otherwise been a regular feature in Postecoglou’s team selection.

Tottenham Hotspur Recent Form and Tactics

Yet again Tottenham had to recover from a one-nil deficit against Crystal Palace to pick up some much-needed points in the Premier League. It is happening all too often and is reflected in their joint-worst defensive record in the top six with 39 goals conceded.

But the club still manage to create and score goals even with Richarlison sidelined. The combination of Maddison, Kulusevski, Son and even Werner means the North London side have threats all over the pitch. They certainly are not a one-man team. This is especially true when they can bring the likes of Brennan Johnson off the bench, who grabbed two vital assists against Palace.

Postecoglou praised Johnson’s progress: “The good thing about Brennan is he’s contributing. Overall this year we’ve seen growth in him playing in a way that is different for him.”

Tottenham’s form in the last five Premier League matches is three wins, two draws and one loss.

Tottenham Hotspur Injuries to Consider

Postecoglou revealed that Pedro Porro has trained this week and is “good” and therefore in contention for the starting lineup. Royal deputised for Porro last time out so it will be interesting to see who the manager favours.

The other big injury news is that Richarlison is still out; it will likely be another two to three weeks before the Brazilian returns to first-team action.

Long-term absences Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon continue to recover from their respective injuries.
