Injury expert confirms ‘worst case’ fears of Tottenham star who was benched vs Bodo/Glimt

Wilson Odobert was not risked in the second leg against Bodo/Glimt with an apparent hamstring tightness

Tottenham Hotspur booked a flight to Spain for the UEFA Europa League final on Thursday evening.

A comprehensive display over two legs saw Spurs beat Bodo/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate in the Europa League semi-final. Their European campaign has been a complete contrast to how the Premier League season has panned out, with Ange Postecoglou’s side still languishing in 16th spot.

Ange Postecoglou has a glorious opportunity to lead the North London club to European glory later this month. It remains to be seen what happens with him at the end of the season, but for now, the Greek-Aussie tactician is on the right path to end the club’s 17-year-long trophy drought.

However, Tottenham’s injury fortunes do not seem like changing at any cost. They have lost two key players in James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall to season-ending injuries earlier this month, while skipper Son Heung-min has missed the last six games with a foot problem. This is in addition to Radu Dragusin’s ACL injury that he sustained back in February.

Now, Dr Rajpal Brar has given an update on the fitness situation of Wilson Odobert. The young winger was an unused substitute in Spurs’ second-leg win over Bodo/Glimt in Norway. And as per the injury expert, the reason behind Ange not bringing on the Frenchman off the bench was tightness or discomfort in his hamstring.

Discussing the state of play with Wilson Odobert exclusively with Tottenham News, Dr Rajpal Brar gave his verdict:

“I reckon that he had a Grade 0 hamstring issue, which was tightness or discomfort, but they didn’t want to take a risk on him initially,” Dr Brar said.

“He has made the matchday squad, so it’s a sign he has recovered.

“The best-case scenario is that he’s able to play with no issues, whereas the worst case is that he either suffers a setback during training or a match, as there’s always that re-injury risk.”

Odobert joined Tottenham from Burnley last summer, a signing the club chiefs pulled out of nowhere. The Frenchman, however, has endured an injury-ravaged debut season at N17. He suffered a serious hamstring injury that forced him to go under the knife in late October. This led to the winger being sidelined for four months, missing 34 games in total in the process.

Ange perhaps didn’t want to take a risk with the Meaux-born talent in Norway on Thursday, and it was the best decision. Hamstring tightness are extremely tricky, and having already lost two key players to injury problems recently, Tottenham cannot afford any more issues.

The Tottenham boss is likely to rotate his squad for the London derby against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Odobert would have been an option to start the game, but after feeling hamstring tightness that led to him not seeing any action on the pitch in midweek, Ange is expected to either name him on the bench again or not include him in the squad at all.
