Legendary Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder backs his old friend Cristian Chivu to succeed in his mission to bring the club to the podium.
The Nerazzurri are coming off an unusual campaign which began with so much promise but ended in vast disappointment.
Inter were the big favourites to retain the Serie A crown. While they seemed to be heading in the right direction at one point, they scuffed their chances in the final hurdles. Back-to-back defeats to Roma and Bologna gifted the lead to Napoli.
Moreover, a dramatic draw against Lazio in the penultimate round denied them the chance to retake the lead.
Therefore, Inter fans can be excused if they don’t feel like betting on their team ahead of the new campaign.
Many of them are still licking their wounds from the previous campaign, not to mention the traumatic defeat to PSG in the Champions League final. As for Sneijder, he admits that Simone Inzaghi’s departure to Al-Hilal will be felt at Inter. Nevertheless, he sees a light at the end of the tunnel.
The Dutchman believes his former teammate, Chivu, is the right man to revive the club.
“When a coach leaves, there’s always emotion, especially after a positive period,” said Sneijder in his interview with Win Win via FcInterNews.
“I understand the fans’ disappointment, but football is also a business. He saw a new challenge and deserves respect.
“However, I’m rooting for my friend Chivu at Inter.”
The interviewer also asked the retired playmaker about his former Inter manager, Jose Mourinho.
Sneijder only had words of praise for the Special One, labelling him as the best of all time.
“Is Mourinho the best coach in history? For me, he is. What we achieved with Inter in 2010 was historic.
“Jose made us believe we could beat anyone. He’s more than a coach, he’s a leader. I will always respect him.”
Sneijder joined Inter in the summer of 2009 following his spell at Real Madrid. He won the famous treble in his first season at the club.
The Dutchman left Appiano Gentile in January 2013 when he signed for Galatasaray.
