The secret of Inter’s solitary lead in the Champions League table is a rock-solid defense!

The Nerazzurri are yet to concede a single goal in this European campaign and, thanks to tonight’s win over RB Leipzig at the San Siro, they are now alone at the top of the UCL table. Only Liverpool and Monaco, who both play tomorrow, have a chance to reach Simone Inzaghi’s side.

An unlucky own goal from French defender Castello Lukeba got the job done for Inter as they caught their fourth win in five games so far. Lukeba deflected the ball into his own goal from a set piece taken by Federico Dimarco with 27 minutes on the clock.

Inter then minded to defend their single-goal lead, a task made easier by Leipzig’s inconsistency upfront. The German side have collected five losses out of their five Champions League outings this season and now need a miracle to avoid ending their campaign before the knockout stage. Their only shot on target of the night, powered by Antonio Nusa, found Yann Sommer up to the task.

Inter, on the other hand, should have added a second to their tally but the referee disallowed Marcus Thuram’s late winner as he caught the French striker committing a foul in the build-up to his goal. Thuram replaced Mehdi Taremi in the middle of the second half as Inzaghi deployed the Iranian striker alongside Lautaro Martinez upfront.

Benjamin Pavard picked up a left thigh injury early on and was forced to leave the pitch. That was the only piece of bad news of the night for Inzaghi, who can now look at the upcoming Serie A away match at Fiorentina with confidence.

Fabrizio Romano provides new Xavi Simons to Chelsea update after it’s all gone quiet there

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided a new Xavi Simons to Chelsea update as things go quiet on that one. Obviously it’s all part of negotiations in football transfers and sometimes things take time to be agreed. Chelsea will be looking to get the very best deal for Simons right now, but yesterday it all went rather silent on the deal. This will of course lead to fans becoming concerned that it might have broken down at the final stages. which is something that has happened before and does happen. But right now, it doesn’t look like it has broken down. Romano provided a very positive update on Simons to Chelsea on Monday night, but yesterday it went quiet. He also had a VERY positive update on Jorrel Hato to Chelsea update late last night, with the ‘here we go’ now coming soon on that one apparently. But what about Simons? Well, unfortunately it looks like this one is further behind than Hato to Chelsea, but it also does not look like talks have broken down at all. Romano said this last night on the Simons deal: “First step [on attackers], go for Xavi Simons, conversations advanced with Leipzig, then next step consider [Alejandro] Garnacho as an opportunity in month of August, if United conditions to sell will match up with Chelsea conditions. For this all to happen, Chelsea will also need Nkunku and Sterling to go, and for Garnacho obviously to not go elsewhere.” Hopefully today brings a breakthrough I expect to hear something more positive on Simons today as well. But if it goes on much longer then you wonder if it will even get done at all and if one party will walk away from the deal. However, I am sure it is all just part and parcel of negotiations and there are just some final details to still tie up.

Oilers to Acquire a Top-Tier Goalie. An Official Trade Offer Is on the Table in a Blockbuster Deal

The Boston Bruins have been under pressure to retool after a disappointing season, and now a potential blockbuster move could shake the entire NHL. A major trade proposal has surfaced that could send a star goaltender to the Edmonton Oilers, a move that would give them the elite presence they've lacked in net while forcing Boston closer to a rebuild. The deal being floated by multiple outlets would send Edmonton's current starter, Stuart Skinner, along with Matthew Savoie, Beau Akey, and a 2028 first-round pick to Boston, while the Oilers land a goaltender capable of changing their Cup window overnight. Edmonton's push for a franchise goalie could reshape the Western Conference and challenge the Dallas Stars' path to the Cup If this trade goes through, the Oilers would instantly address one of their biggest weaknesses, setting up a showdown with teams like the Dallas Stars, who already see Edmonton as one of their toughest rivals. Boston, on the other hand, would fully commit to a rebuild, pairing Joonas Korpisalo with Skinner in what could be one of the NHL's weakest tandems, likely boosting their draft lottery odds in one of the most hyped draft classes in recent memory (NHL.com). An insider noted, "They weren't the only ones who had inquired about Swayman, but yes, I was told they poked around." That comment shows just how wide the interest is for this level of goalie talent (Heavy.com). I think this kind of trade would completely shift the balance of power in the West, making Edmonton even more dangerous for teams like Dallas, who could end up facing a vastly upgraded Oilers team in the playoffs. If Boston truly embraces a rebuild, moving their top goaltender could be the first domino in a massive roster overhaul, something that could shake the market for weeks.

Maple Leafs Top Prospect Shatters Expectations at World Junior Showcase

The World Junior Summer Showcase is in full swing, and Maple Leafs top prospect Ben Danford is shattering expectations, truly proving how good of a player he can be. The Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive prospect, Ben Danford, is among the 44 players who were invited to Hockey Canada's World Juniors Summer Showcase. Hockey Canada finally unveiled the 44 prospects who will head to Minnesota for the showcase, after they held the roster release back while the organization dealt with several injuries, which begins Sunday and runs through August 2 in Minneapolis. Defensive prospect Ben Danford is the only Maple Leafs player invited to the annual showcase, where Canada's World Junior staff will get their first look at what their team might look like for the 2026 World Juniors, which will also take place in Minnesota in December. Danford is being called the best player at the World Juniors Summer Showcase Danford has been exceeding expectations, and one source revealed that he has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase so far. The source said Danford is steady, smart, and hard to ignore on the ice. 'Ben Danford has been the best player at the World Junior Showcase he's steady, smart, and impossible to ignore. Makes every shift count, whether he's breaking up plays or starting the rush. Canada's blue line is in good hands.' - An unnamed source The Maple Leafs selected Danford with their first pick (31st overall) at the 2024 NHL Draft. During his visit to Toronto's development camp earlier this month, the defender revealed that he's receiving mentorship from current Leafs defensemen as well as some alumni like Mark Giordano. The 6-foot-2 Danford could make for an excellent fit for Canada should he make the team. He is responsible in his own end, and he demonstrated leadership capabilities when he was named captain of the Oshawa Generals ahead of the 2024-25 OHL season.

Pitcher bizarrely faces old team on same day of trade

Seranthony Dominguez certainly had an eventful day on Tuesday. The veteran MLB reliever began the day on the Baltimore Orioles and was with his teammates in the dugout during the first leg of a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays. The O's went on to win, 16-4, at Oriole Park in Baltimore, though Dominguez did not pitch during the game. But the day took a bizarre turn when the two teams agreed to a deal in the middle of the doubleheader. The Orioles traded Dominguez to the Blue Jays in exchange for minor league pitcher Juaron Watts-Brown. That led to a strange scene where Dominguez switched clubhouses after being traded, walking across the hallway to get to the Toronto side. Things got even weirder during the second leg of the doubleheader. Dominguez got the call to pitch for the Blue Jays against his former team. He had to walk past his ex-Baltimore teammates to get to the Toronto bullpen, and then entered the game in the seventh inning to pitch. Here is the unusual spectacle that saw Dominguez pitch against the guys that he began the day as teammates with. The whole thing was so bizarre that it even looked like Dominguez received a hastily-made Blue Jays jersey with the “8” in his No. 48 apparently stuck on backwards. Dominguez, a 30-year-old in his seventh MLB season, ended up striking out two in a scoreless frame against his former team. We have certainly seen instances of MLB players getting traded in the middle of games before, but that had to be the first instance of a player starting the first half of a doubleheader on one team and then pitching in the second half for the other team.
