Minnesota United could be preparing to say goodbye to James Rodríguez when they host the Colorado Rapids at Allianz Field on Wednesday night.

Multiple reports have suggested that the Colombian star is expected to leave the club after the match to join Colombia’s national team camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old only arrived in Minnesota earlier this year on a short-term contract running through June, with an option for the remainder of the season.

James Rodríguez to Depart Minnesota United FC Per Sources

Rodríguez's move to MLS generated major excitement, but his time with the Loons has been shorter and quieter than many expected. Injuries, fitness issues and international preparation limited his involvement, with Rodríguez making only a handful of MLS appearances.

Despite the speculation around his future, Rodríguez has responded strongly against retirement rumours.

Speaking recently, the former Real Madrid midfielder said he still believes he has “a few more years” left in football and dismissed reports claiming the upcoming World Cup would be his final tournament.

Rodríguez showed his quality again last weekend during Minnesota’s 2-2 draw with Austin FC

He came off the bench and provided two assists as the team fought back in front of their home fans. It was one of his best performances for the club so far and a reminder of the creativity he still brings on the field.

Minnesota enter Wednesday’s game in solid form and remain among the stronger teams in the Western Conference.

The Loons are unbeaten in their last four MLS matches, winning three and drawing one, and will look to continue that run against a Colorado Rapids side that has lost its last three league games heading into Wednesday night’s clash.

It is still unclear if this will be Rodríguez’s final MLS game, but there is growing belief that he could say goodbye in Saint Paul on Wednesday night.
