Istanbul gets 2023 Champions League final after COVID-19 relocations

Istanbul will be hoping the third time's the charm.

Reuters (h/t ESPN) noted Friday that UEFA has confirmed the locations for the next four Champions League finals. Notably, Istanbul was given the 2023 title match after losing a pair of such games because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 final was relocated from Istanbul to Lisbon after officials relinquished the rights for the contest upon learning the stadium wouldn't be filled with spectators due to the health crisis. This year's final was shifted to Porto so that a limited number of paying customers could attend the game between Chelsea and Manchester City that Chelsea won 1-0.

Host cities were originally pushed back by one year in 2020, so Saint Petersburg will now be home to the 2022 final. London's Wembley Stadium will stage the 2024 final, and Munich will welcome clubs and supporters for the 2025 fixture.

These plans, like many, are subject to change depending on future coronavirus cases in countries and cities, and also virus variants found throughout the world.
