'It wasn’t a bad header' – Armando Broja on his vital goal that changed the game for Chelsea

Chelsea had a funny old night, and Armando Broja was the perfect example.

The Blues were pretty dreadful in the first half, and Broja was a big part of that. He lacked support and the team lacked any organisation in their play, but he was still poor when he did get the ball.

But everything changed when he nodded in a great header in the 58th minute. Suddenly Chelsea were on the front foot and he was involved all over. He could have had a couple more goals by the end.

His comments to BBC Sport after the game were interesting:

“At the beginning, it was difficult to break them down. They were quite deep and narrow but we made some adjustments and the game opened up. We created more opportunities and played more of our football.

“I just tried to get myself into the box. I saw it was an opportunity for them to deliver a cross in and I tried to get my head on it. It wasn’t a bad header!”

“A little bit [of relief to score]. Coming off the bench and playing a few games and not scoring is not easy. I’m really excited and happy I could get that goal today. Hopefully there’s many more in the future.”

“We’re a very young squad, everyone knows that. We have a completely new team with a lot of young players. We try to bond together and it’s good to build that for many years to come.”

Broja will know as well as anyone that his overall game has got to be better. But scoring should ensure he keeps his place as Nicolas Jackson’s backup, and if he can keep scoring nice goals like his effort today, nobody will be complaining.
