Luciano Spalletti has announced his 30-man preliminary Italy squad ahead of the European Championship, so which four players will be dropped for the tournament?

The Azzurri will play out two friendlies before this summer’s tournament in Germany, facing Turkey on June 4th and Bosnia on June 9th. At the European Championship, Spalletti’s side will face Spain, Croatia and Albania in Group B.

A number of notable absences from the preliminary Italy squad have already raised eyebrows amongst supporters, including Manuel Locatelli, Giacomo Bonaventura, Ciro Immobile, Michele Di Gregorio, Federico Gatti and Matteo Politano.

Four Italy players to be dropped

UEFA have already confirmed that teams can include up to 26 players for the European Championship in Germany, so Spalletti’s Italy will have to drop four from the 30-man preliminary squad for the tournament.

Of the four goalkeepers included, Lazio’s Ivan Provedel is the obvious choice to cut, especially considering his recent struggles with injuries.

In defence, Torino’s Raoul Bellanova could be on the chopping block, facing tough competition in his role. His lack of experience at international level doesn’t help his chances of making the squad either.

The obvious choice to make space in the midfield is Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli, who has barely played any football this season due to his lengthy betting ban.

Hellas Verona’s Michael Folorunsho seems another likely choice to be cut from the Italy squad, having never made a senior appearance for the Azzurri.
