James Garner makes admission about Manchester United exit

Manchester United rebuilt their midfield this summer, signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba but, before that, the club once had James Garner, who is now being hailed as a ‘mini Valverde’.

Garner left Old Trafford permanently in the 2022 summer transfer window, joining Everton for an initial £9m fee, and has only grown since that moment.

The season prior to that (2021/22), which saw Manchester United’s midfield ranks filled with players such as Bruno Fernandes, Andreas Pereira, and Donny van de Beek, Garner was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest for a second straight campaign in the Championship.

Utilising the experience he gained at Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Watford (loan), alongside learning from David Moyes, Sean Dyche, and Frank Lampard, Garner has built himself into a better midfielder since those loan spells.

17 appearances came in the 2022/23 season, his first with the Toffees, but, since then, he has established himself as a consistent part of the team, especially under the management of Moyes.

Sitting on the cusp of his first competitive England cap, after being named in the nation’s late call-ups list, Garner has broken his silence on leaving Manchester United with him making an admission.

“I think it was the perfect thing for me to do,” the 25-year-old said to The Telegraph.

“I’ve never been shy of going into a more uncomfortable place.

“I went on loan three times, I went to Watford and then twice to Nottingham Forest, so I moved early and moved down to London and to Nottingham, so I wasn’t worried about moving at all, changing scenery or anything that.

“For me, it was just about playing games and Everton was the perfect choice at that point.

“I didn’t just want to fizzle into the background and just sit on the bench and stuff like that, so I wanted to go into a team where I felt like I had a chance to fight for my position and that’s what I have done in the past three or four years.”

When pressed on whether he regrets leaving Manchester United, the midfielder said: “No, not really. I am a big believer that everything happens for a reason. When I left they signed three or four midfielders, world-class ones.

“Had I stayed, I wouldn’t have been where I am today, so I am more than happy that I left.”

With James Garner taking the next steps in his playing career, it is clear to see his development from playing for Manchester United Under-18s to becoming a senior international with England.

Now, for the midfielder, it is also taking the necessary steps, as he has done throughout his career, and pushing himself further forward.
